Dominion Divers successfully completes Fish Exclusion System Project.

Dominion Divers Ltd. of Winnipeg, Manitoba recently completed another general contract for the fabrication and installation of a fish exclusion system. The latest project was a $300,000.00 contract for Shell Canada at the Ft.Saskatchewan, Alberta upgrader facility.
Some of the technical difficulties that had to be overcome were the cleaning of an existing concrete apron in the North Saskatchewan river, attached to the pump house, without disturbing the natural state of the river. Craning the components of the structure, which totaled 30 tonnes, over the existing 9m high pump house to the river. Placing a 2.4m x 5.4m skidplate / manifold / screen assembly that had to be placed between the abutments with a tolerance of 1.75mm. Holes were cored into the pump house and all the related high and low pressure air line piping was installed. Finally an ice bumper was mounted at water level.

Due to the sensitive nature of the habitat, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans kept the work to a tight schedule, allowing a limited time frame to complete the work in the river. The divers faced many other unique elements within the scope of work, in addition to the technical complexities there were environmental issues to adhere to. Mainly the use of hydraulic tools in the water, a canola based biodegradable oil was used. All parties involved were satisfied with the execution and completion of the project.
Dominion Divers Ltd. is currently involved in the second similar structure they have done with Manitoba Hydro.
