Training: Diving health and safety is a major concern of all diving companies. In order to ensure a harmonized and consistent approach throughout the Province when enforcing the Ontario Diving Regulation, the Ontario Ministry of Labour has conducted a basic diving inspector training course for selected inspectors, from April 7 – 10 , 2003.
MOL Diving Grads.
The training covered “The Basics of Commercial Diving” and “Conducting a Diving Inspection” and was presented by the Ministry’s Diving Specialists with assistance from Seneca College staff at their diver training facility in King City.
OJT Training.
Participants where selected based on previous diving knowledge and experience and will be assigned to carry out basic diving inspections in addition to their regular duties as construction or industrial inspectors. The course included SCUBA and surface-supplied air diving operations, physiological hazards related to the direct and indirect affects of pressure, workplace and environmental hazards, diving legislation and standards, accident review and program inspection policies and guidelines. The “hands-on” field component of the program allowed participants to carry out an actual field inspection of an active diving operation under controlled conditions of Seneca students conducting underwater training in Lake Seneca.

Five other construction inspectors were trained for basic inspection duties in the various other areas of the province under the direct guidance of the Diving Specialists. Bob Landry remains the Diving Specialist in the Central Region and John Mitchell is the Diving Specialist in the Eastern/Northern Regions.
